Hugh Jackman Explains the ‘Slightly Different Universe’ of ‘Logan’

How about that last Logan trailer, huh? While the first trailer will probably be remembered as the one that got everyone excited for a mature Wolverine movie, the second trailer? —? even without the Johnny Cash music playing in the background ?— ?is the one that really sets the hook. What was hinted at in the first go-around now feels lived in and personal; Hugh Jackman’s Logan has never seemed more tired, and Dafne Keen’s X-23 has never seemed more dangerous.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the Logan trailer, however, was the idea that the film takes place in a world where X-Men comics exist. This sparked about a dozen different timeline questions, questions that Hugh Jackman didn’t exactly help answer in his recent interview with Digital Spy (via Collider):

” When you see the full movie you’ll understand. Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it’s a slightly different universe. It’s actually a different paradigm and that will become clear.

It’s a stand alone movie in many ways. It’s not really beholden to time lines and story lines in the other movies. Obviously Patrick Stewart was in there so we have some crossover but it feels very different and very fresh. [Following the timelines] becomes a chess game that you try to serve, which actually doesn’t help to tell a story and it’s sort of been a bit all over the place.”

We’ve known for a while that Logan was set to be a departure for both Jackman and director James Mangold. In the Digital Spy interview, Jackman even hints that the studio gave him the green light to tell any kind of Wolverine story he wanted for his last hurrah as the character. And if Logan is embracing a parallel universe and the finality of the characters, then odds are good that nothing and no one is safe. Expect a film unafraid to trample all over the sacred cows of previous entries in the franchise.

Here’s your official plot synopsis for Logan:

“In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.”

Logan releases on March 3rd, 2017.
